Fortress

It’s been a little bit between updates, I’ve taken to working from the office again mostly and my painting time is much reduced as a result. It also hasn’t helped that Diablo 4 is finally out! Regardless, I found myself with a bit of painting time today and decided to use it to finish off something that’s been in progress for a good 3-4 years.

Those of you familiar with the old Warhammer Fortress might have recognised it in the background of a few of my photos over the years, most recently in my previous post, and further back as backdrop for my Skaven army. It’s finally painted, and will be used as part of the Border Princes campaign.

These photos are a bit lower quality than what I try do do usually, I don’t have lightning big enough to take photos of something that size, so the room lights had to do!

Painting-wise I don’t have much detail unfortunately (that’s what I get for taking so long to paint something!) but generally here’s how it was approached:

  • The whole model was undercoated with some spray paint from the hardware store – a greyish brown
  • The model was washed with some thinned down brown craft acrylic
  • Everything was dry brushed with greys, dark to light
  • Some stones were picked out with GW Shades, in blues, reds and ochres.
  • The wood bits were picked out in GW Contrast Cygor Brown
  • The metal bits were picked out in Vallejo Gun Metal
  • A very light wash of Abteilung 502 Dust Oil Paint was done over the stone areas to represent mortar
  • A dry brush of Vallejo Goblin Green was done on the lower parts of the walls and towers to make them look a bit mossy
  • A slight dry brush of brown and bone was done over the areas that would be trodden on, i.e. the tops of the walls and the towers

This was pretty fun to paint even considering the size of it, and I look forward to using it in games! I’ll leave you with a couple of shots with miniatures in the battlements so you can see the scale for yourself. Till next time!

    1. Thanks! It’s a little thing I saw in a magazine article once and I do it on pretty much all my terrain aimed at temperate climes. Adds a nice amount of variation into what would otherwise be rather boring grey!

  1. Hopefully you’re working in the office by choice! There is a big push here in the States by many employers to get their employees back in the office and I consider myself lucky to not be in that boat thus far.

The castle came out really nicely and it looks like it had to have taken a while to get finished. It will be great in future games and it looks like it is just about the right size too. I don’t know if this fits your vision for the castle or not but I wonder if a bit of moss growing around the bottom of stones might make it look a little more “lived in” and give it that Warhammer feel. Just a thought if you want to work on it a bit more!

    1. Thanks Jeff! I do have some foam flocks that might work well for some mossy extras, good idea.
I’m back in the office mostly by choice, the type of work I’m doing now is better served by a lot of in the room workshopping and I’d rather do that well than struggle through virtual whiteboards! Generally workplaces here have adapted pretty well to remote work, and most places seem to be happy to keep it in place, including my work which has been very flexible.

      1. You’re welcome and that’s good to hear. I work pretty independently so going to the office doesn’t have a ton of value for me. I’m glad that employers are being a bit more flexible in Australia. There are still plenty of jobs that are hybrid or remote, but they’re becoming rarer as time goes on.

  2. Awesome looking Fortress, mate! That’s a projhect that I started working on but unfortunately petered out so I’ve got a ton of assembled and sprayed castle walls in a box somewhere. Maybe when the weather gets better I can get started on it again…
I do feel you on how D4 can take a little bit of time as well. 🙂
